KaRo
Systems Radiant Heating & Radiant Cooling
A New Concept in Air Conditioning
History of KaRo
The KaRo system was developed by Donald Herbst, who is the inventor of the capillary tube in Germany since 1985. In German, KaRo stands for Kapillar Rohr (=capillary tube).
The first installation appeared 1986 in Berlin, Germany. The project was to use the KaRo capillary tubes of a large building using the mats in the ceilings and walls, and the rest is History! The results were impressive to the Air Conditioning market, as new technology took hold of introducing a new concept of Indoor Air Quality and Radiant Comfort.
These results were confirmed by a study from the technical University of Berlin (Herman Rietschel Institute), and research work accomplished in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Arizona State University http://support.caed.asu.edu/radiant/ or http://www.caed.asu.edu/msenergy/research-projects.html related to thermal comfort as affected by radiant surfaces and thermal mass. First, is an overview of the basic principles pertaining to human comfort, then, a presentation of the performance results of case studies that use radiant panels as the primary strategy in achieving thermal comfort, clearly showing the efficiency and high comfort of the KaRo capillary tubes system.
KaRo radiant ceilings proved their suitability in offices or hotels, where comfort is an important consideration. Thus, banks quickly became important clients for KaRo, starting with the Weber bank at Berlin, Nürnberger Strasse (see picture below).
Banks were followed by industry, and Lichtwer Pharma was the first large industrial building installed (4000 m² / 43000 sq ft). KaRo systems allowed to save 50 cm (20 in) in the height of the false ceiling and this gave the architect the opportunity to have one more floor for the same height of the building. This installation was then considered as a reference in all Europe.
KaRo radiant ceilings kept on giving satisfaction and was acknowledged as the absolute reference in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland now its gaining acceptance in Argentina, and Brazil.
This development followed in Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, and then all Europe, with some spectacular realizations like the administrative center of Nestlé France in Noisiel (30 000 m² / 320, 000 sq ft). Hewlett Packard office at Geneva.
The development was particularly strong in Geneva, partly due to the large number of banks or prestigious buildings. Laws on energy expenses also played a significant role, forcing to shift from traditional systems to economical ones like KaRo.
As we progressed KaRo became a leader in the Air Conditioning industry, and is currently used in:
